Masks
Dust, respiratory, and surgical masks, along with related breathing protection, are respiratory protective equipment used to reduce inhalation of harmful airborne substances or to limit the spread of infection, but they differ in how much protection they provide and whom they are primarily protecting.Dust masks are simple filtering masks (often disposable) meant mainly for nuisance dusts or low‑level particulates; they offer basic filtration but are not usually certified for serious occupational hazards.Respirators (such as N95 or other certified filtering facepiece or cartridge respirators) are tight‑fitting devices designed and tested to protect the wearer by filtering hazardous airborne particles, gases, or vapors to defined performance standards.Surgical/medical masks are loose‑fitting, disposable masks that create a physical barrier to large droplets and splashes and mainly protect others from the wearer’s respiratory emissions, with limited protection for the wearer from fine aerosols.Breathing protection is a broad term covering all such respiratory PPE—ranging from simple masks to certified respirators and supplied‑air systems—used to prevent inhalation of hazardous dusts, mists, fumes, gases, vapors, or infectious aerosols in workplaces or healthcare settings.
